Victorian Garnet and Diamond Pendant
A splendid pendant on a substantial chain. The large central garnet catches the light with deep fiery flashes, and the central diamond is lively and twinkly. Created around 1870, this piece epitomises high-Victorian style and taste, with the twisted gold, vibrant red garnet, and brilliant diamonds. To the back of the pendant is a small locket in which is encased a lock of hair, suggesting that this piece was created as mourning jewellery. Joanna Hardy says: A lovely pendant with chain, set with a nice, high garnet cabochon, which is foil backed so the garnet glistens when worn. A lock of hair rests in the glass compartment to the reverse. The pendant is of a lovely, rich gold colour. A lovely everyday jewel.
