Hattie Carnegie 1960’s Hattie Carnegie Earrings
The Designer Born Henrietta Kanengeiser in Austria in the late 1800’s Hattie and her family moved to New York in 1900 where they planned for new beginnings. It was when she worked in the hat department in Macys that she got the name Hattie, and she adopted the surname Carnegie to fit in with American culture. Opening her first shop in 1920 Carnegie quickly became a successful entrepreneur. It is believed that her jewellery did not become popular until the late 1930’s after it was first used to embellish garments. After her death in 1956 the company was taken over by Larry Josephs and in 1976 it was taken over by Chromology American Corporation. The Carnegie brand signature name continued right through to the late 1970’s.
