A Pair Of Victorian Micro-Mosaic Putti Earrings
A charming and exquisitely crafted pair of Victorian drop earrings. These earrings feature the technique of micro-mosaic, in which tiny pieces of glass are arranged in a mosaic to form an image. Each earring features a wonderfully detailed putti head with wings, surrounded by a circular border of a red and blue pattern. Each mosaic is mounted in bright yellow gold and suspended by a gold domed top with wire hook fittings. Micro-mosaic jewellery became very popular during the 19th century, when Europeans would travel through Italy. Earrings and other pieces of micro-mosaic jewellery made in Rome became popular souvenirs, and this pair of earrings is an exceptional example of fine, classically inspired micro-mosaic work. Joanna Hardy says: “These earrings are sweet! The cherubs face different directions, so these earrings have a definite left- and right-ear arrangement, which is something you normally see from the 1950s; it is quite unusual to see Victorian earrings with a left and a right. Wear them facing each other or looking away!”
