Diamond And Yellow Gold Cocktail Ring

A fabulous vintage cocktail ring. Bold and sculptural, this ring features a thick gold shank with a geometrically designed form featuring a central diamond flanked by brightly-coloured synthetic rubies, characteristic of this period, style and manufacture of cocktail jewellery. This sophisticated ring was made circa 1940 and reflects the transition from Art Deco to mid-century style. Joanna Hardy says: €œA great €˜cocktail€™ ring, very typical of the 1940s, taking its design from the Odeon Cinemas. A big ring, but light in weight, which is typical of the period as gold was scarce as it was reserved for the war effort. The old-cut diamond would have been used from an earlier ring as the diamond was cut around the 1890s. It is later hallmarked by Bentley & Skinner, as many jewels from this period would not have been hallmarked. Synthetic rubies are also very typical in jewellery from this period because of the scarcity of natural rubies at the time.€
